The tour for people who plan trips around meals

There’s a version of wine touring that treats food as fuel between tastings. This is the other version. Santorini’s flagship white grape — bone-dry and mineral, all lemon, flint, and sea-spray salinity, with acidity that lets the best bottles age for two decades. Pronounced ah-SEER-tee-ko. & Aegean Table exists because Santorini’s wine and Santorini’s food are the same story — volcanic soil, no water, tiny yields, intense flavors — and the only honest way to tell it is with a fork in your hand.

The island’s greatest pairing isn’t exotic: bone-dry Assyrtiko against its own neighbors — yellow split-pea fava grown in the same pumice, tomato fritters made from the tiny waterless Santorini tomato, grilled fish an hour out of the Aegean. Acidity, salt, sun. You’ll taste why critics call Assyrtiko one of the world’s great food wines, at the table where the claim gets proven daily.

Two wineries chosen for contrast

Gaia Wines starts the day at sea level — literally on the beach between Kamari and Monolithos, in a repurposed 1900s tomato factory. The tasting is pure Aegean: Thalassitis, their flagship Assyrtiko named for the sea; a wild-ferment bottling; and the tale of Submerged, a few hundred bottles aged on the seabed offshore — one of the most quotable experiments in Greek wine. Waves audible from the tasting bar.

Artemis Karamolegos answers from the hills of Exo Gonia: a family label since 1952, now among the island’s three biggest producers and one of its most awarded, with serious old-vine, single-vineyard work. You’ll walk the cellar and taste four wines — then walk thirty meters to the reason this tour exists.

Aroma Avlis: the long lunch

The estate’s own farm-to-table restaurant sits in a courtyard against the vines, and for almost two hours it’s yours. Courses arrive family-style and paired — each dish matched to a Karamolegos wine by a kitchen that shares a wall with the cellar. Expect the island’s canon done properly: fava with capers, tomato fritters, Cycladic cheeses, a slow main, something sweet with a final glass. Menus follow the garden and the season, which is exactly as it should be; dietary needs are handled with a day’s notice.

No pairing lecture, either. The matches explain themselves; your guide adds a sentence where it helps and otherwise lets the table do the teaching.

Where does the €219 go?

At €219 this is our second-priciest shared tour, and here’s the math: the included restaurant lunch alone runs €65+ per person at the estate’s own published pairing-menu rates, before nine tastings at two wineries, transport, and two staff. Comparable food-and-wine tours on the platforms list at $205–227 with the wineries unnamed. Ours are named, fixed, and chosen because they’re each other’s best argument.

Pace yourself at Gaia, trust the kitchen, and if this sells the concept but you want it fully private — your own table, your own menu consultation — the Private Cellar builds lunch-centered days on request. Prefer sunset light to lunch light? Golden Hour is the evening answer.

Is the Assyrtiko & Aegean Table worth it? The short answer

The Assyrtiko & Aegean Table is a 5-hour Santorini wine and food tour: €219 per person, eight guests maximum, two named wineries and one long vineyard lunch. You taste five wines at Gaia, the 1900s tomato factory turned winery on the black-sand beach between Kamari and Monolithos, and four on the cellar walk at Artemis Karamolegos in Exo Gonia — then spend nearly two hours at Aroma Avlis, the estate’s own farm-to-table restaurant among the vines, where shared courses of fava, tomato fritters, cheeses, a slow main, and a sweet finish arrive matched to Karamolegos wines by the kitchen that shares a wall with the cellar. All nine tastings, the full paired lunch, every winery and restaurant charge, dietary coordination with the kitchen, and hotel pickup across Fira, Imerovigli, Oia, Kamari, and Perissa are included, and cancellation is free up to 48 hours ahead. It’s the day for eaters who drink — most guests skip dinner afterward.

Itinerary

The route, stop by stop

  1. 01 11:00

    Hotel pickup

  2. 02 11:30 · 75 min

Gaia Wines, on the Kamari–Monolithos beach

    A 1900s tomato factory on the black-sand waterline, reborn as one of Greece's most respected wineries. 3. 03 13:00 · 45 min

Artemis Karamolegos — the cellar walk

Into Exo Gonia for the working side: tanks, barrels, and four tastes that map the estate's range from young volcanic Assyrtiko to old-vine cuvées. Short and focused — because the kitchen next door is about to take over.

  4. 04 13:45 · 105 min

The long lunch at Aroma Avlis

The estate's farm-to-table restaurant, set in a courtyard against the vines. Multiple courses off the island — fava, tomato fritters, slow-cooked local dishes, whatever the garden gave that morning — each matched to a Karamolegos wine by the people who made both. This is the heart of the day: nearly two hours, no menu decisions, no bill anxiety.

Good to know

Assyrtiko & Aegean Table: your questions

How much food is actually served — is this really lunch?

Genuinely a full lunch, and most guests skip dinner afterward. Expect several shared courses at Aroma Avlis built from the estate's garden and island producers — fava, tomato fritters, cheeses, a main, a sweet finish — plus the meze-style bites that accompany tastings at Gaia. Come hungry; that's why we start at 11:00.

Can the kitchen handle vegetarian, gluten-free, or allergies?

Yes, with notice. Santorini's traditional table is naturally half-vegetarian (fava, tomato fritters, salads, cheeses), and Aroma Avlis adapts courses for gluten-free and most allergies when we flag it at least a day ahead. Tell us when you book and we confirm the adjusted menu before your tour.

Is this a cooking class?

No — nobody hands you an apron. This is the eating-and-drinking version of Santorini food culture: the kitchen cooks, the winemaker's team pours, and you sit among the vines for two hours. If you want hands-on, ask us about private arrangements and we'll point you honestly to who does classes well.

Why Gaia and Karamolegos specifically?

Because the pairing logic is real, not decorative. Gaia shows Assyrtiko at its most mineral — sea-level, salt-air winemaking — and Karamolegos runs its own restaurant, so lunch is matched by the estate that made the wine, from a garden thirty meters from your table. No restaurant partner juggling six suppliers; one kitchen, one cellar, one courtyard.
