Do Santorini Wineries Require Reservations? Winery by Winery

The single most common way visitors lose a Santorini wine day: assuming wineries work like bars. Half of them do. The other half run on appointments, lead times, and doors that stay politely shut — and no central site tells you which is which. This one does, winery by winery, verified August 2026. (Policies shift; our winery guide is re-checked quarterly.)

The locked doors: appointment-only

Hatzidakis is the strictest gate on the island: Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30–15:30, appointments only, and the twelve-wine deep tasting needs a day’s notice minimum. No sign says “tastings”; without a booking there is nothing to walk into. Art Space arranges visits by phone or email only — no booking engine exists — and the 1861 cave receives who it expects. Domaine Sigalas carries the island’s longest queue: one to two weeks in peak season, 48 hours minimum for degustations. Mikra Thira on Therasia requires online booking and ferry planning — refunds stop 48 hours out, so lock the boat before the tasting.

The maybes: book or gamble

Venetsanos asks for 48 hours online and means it — “fully booked most days” is their own phrase, and sunset terrace slots go about a week out in July–August. Estate Argyros officially takes appointments but genuinely tries to fit drop-ins; afternoons fill first, and platters adapt to diets with a day’s notice. Vassaltis books through its own system; the minimalist space means finite seats, and the restaurant requires reservations outright. Gaia rewards deciding early with its refund scale (100% only five-plus days out). Artemis Karamolegos fits walk-ins when space allows, but the Aroma Avlis pairing menus want a day’s notice.

The open doors: just show up

Gavalas is the island’s friendliest door — daily in season, reservations only for groups. Canava Roussos takes walk-ins up to about five people (phone for more; there’s no online anything). The Wine Museum sells tickets at the door year-round, though June–September timed slots reward booking. Santo Wines welcomes walk-ins to its terrace most of the day — the exception is sunset, when reserved tables are the only tables.

Strategy: build the day backward

Plan like our operations desk does. Anchor first: fix the strictest reservation — a Sigalas garden slot, the Hatzidakis morning — and let everything orbit it. Sunset is a reservation, not a mood: decide by Tuesday where Friday’s sun sets on you. Keep one walk-in in reserve: a Gavalas or Roussos slot needs no promise and rescues any collapsed plan.
